On March 10th at "The Grove" in Los Angeles, we had a kimono fashion show to raise funds for the East Japan great earthquake "Endless Discovery Japan" sponsored by the Japanese consulate general. "The Grove" is located in between Beverly Hills and Hollywood, and it is a very popular shopping and dinning place for both locals and tourists from all over the world. Our kimono fashion show was not only for traditional kimonos but also modern kimonos designed by Sueko Oshimoto. The audience loved the variety of kimonos such as homongi(semi formal for women), kurotomesode(the most formal kimono for married woman), furisode(long sleeved formal kimono for non married women) and a wedding kimono. Everyone enjoyed the comical performance by male models. Dancers performed with kimono costumes designed by Sueko Oshimoto with the music of "You make me feel". Everyone from different countries know wedding dresses, so wedding dresses made with kimono were easy to relate to. There were Victorian style and mini skirt style. They gave new impressions of Kimono. We also showed how to dress Geisha and the Geisha performed. Since Geisha is one of the known unique Japanese culture, this was the one that local people were most interested in. We had a wow moment when the bride took the hat off. This is Japanese Elegance. It was a sunny day with lots of families visiting. I was fold that on this day the Grove had the highest number of visitors. After we had the kimono shows twice at the Grove, we went to the Music Institute in Hollywood. They also held a fundraising event for Japan relief and we received a request of modern and classic kimono shows. This MI Concert Hall is able to accommodate 500 people, and the sound, display system, and monitors are perfect. The show was successful and far exceeded our expectations because the kimono models walked beautifully and the dancers performed wonderfully.
