Known for her innovative costume design in the futuristic, classic, and fantasy genre, her imaginative use of unconventional materials, and infinite eye for detail, the work of Sueko Oshimoto has been featured in Best Costume award-winning fashion films, television, and countless international fashion magazines such as VOGUE Italia, VOGUE Germany, and L’OFFICIEL India. Her powerful use of color to tell stories on screen and the combination of exaggerated proportions in silhouette with a couture fashion edge has quickly become her trademark.
Her academic studies in Japanese culture, passion for architecture, flower arrangement, and color theory, along with her background as a kimono master for over 30 years, led her organically into the discipline of costume design. Sueko created Miss Universe Japan national costumes for two consecutive years beginning in 2013, where she ranked fifth in the national costume category.
Sueko has outfitted celebrities such as Miranda Kerr and Carmen Electra and has worked on music videos for artists like Sean Paul and DJ Diplo. She was honored to be selected alongside renowned creatives such as Camilla Åkrans and Sissy Vian for the VOGUE Japan 15th Anniversary Collector's Edition. She also appeared in the fashion film Kiss of a Siren, for which she designed over 20 kimono costumes. The film went on to win Best Costume Design and Best Picture at the La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival, often referred to as the "Cannes of fashion film."
Sueko recently served as a Kimono Specialist for the Emmy Award-winning FX series Shogun and LA Opera’s Madama Butterfly (2023 season), providing kimono styling, fittings, and traditional movement guidance for actors and performers.
Her work has caught the attention of some of Hollywood's most celebrated directors. Based in Los Angeles and Japan, she continues to push the boundaries of costume design. She is a member of the Costume Designers Guild Local 892 and the founder of KIMONO SK, a Japanese kimono costume house.
